Wasps - our Biodiversity Key Workers

At Habitat First Group, we are keen to protect all the wildlife on our estates, including species such as wasps that might be deemed a pest.

Wasps are great contributors to our biodiversity. Not only are they excellent pollinators and fantastic decomposers, they also help to control and manage mosquitos and midges. With a great sense of smell, used for sourcing food, wasps have a proverbial ‘sweet tooth’, which is why they are attracted to our outside dining spaces.

Summertime is a great time for wasps to become more noticeable. With more of us enjoying the summer sun with a quiet drink, tasty ice cream, or a casual meal outside, wasps are often drawn to the aroma of meat and sweet treats.

Although great at helping nature, wasps aren’t great at helping people to relax. To help us manage the wasps around these areas, we are using a natural deterrent: Waspinators. Waspinators are a harm free way to repel wasps; they mimic an enemy wasp nest, which naturally deters them from the area. You might have noticed these when popping into the Ballihoo restaurant, Pizza Shack, and market shop.

Wasps are great for the environment, so please do be patient with them over the summer months.
